The conference is a unique, independent “for users, by users” event covering BIM and workflows centered around Autodesk Revit. This article captures the highlights of the wide range of technology solutions exhibited at the recently held AIA National Convention and Expo from vendors such as Autodesk, Bentley, Graphisoft, Nemetschek North America, IES, Trelligence, AutoDesSys, and Z Corporation, as well as some new technology initiatives from the AIA. It also describes my experience as a virtual attendee at the event, as I was not able to attend in person this year.

This article captures the highlights of three key applications–AutoCAD, Revit, and 3ds Max Design–from Autodesk’s new 2011 design software portfolio, which was launched last week through a webcast. The main objectives for Autodesk in this product release were improved graphics for better visualization, better data interoperability between its applications, consistent user interface across all applications, and improving the power and sophistication of the applications while at the same time making them simpler and easier to use.

In this article, Chris France, CIO of Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, a 225 person firm located in Charlotte NC, describes how they built a private cloud that included their high performance graphics workstations. A private cloud differs from the public cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services or Google by the fact that the cloud computing infrastructure and resources are controlled by the individual business that deploys it. Little’s cloud is the first AEC workstation cloud in production and is on track to reduce the firm’s workstation and laptop hardware expense by 67% ($2M) over the next 10 years. The article also describes many of the additional business benefits the firm has achieved through its workstation cloud approach and shares some of its implementation details.

This article discusses and analyzes the information presented at the AEC industry keynote at Autodesk University 2009, which highlighted the growing trend towards renovation in addition to sustainability by showcasing two GSA projects: the National Building Museum in Washington DC, and the Tuttle Courthouse Annex in Atlanta.
